Florence + the machine:
Florence Welch has a stunning operatic voice that sounds like it would fit in an opera, but also in a dingy bar, which makes it quite the original combination. I have a soft spot for UK rock, but I'd be hard pressed to pigeonhole her debut album 'Lungs' as Brit Rock. I can't help but appreciate the originality of the heavily theatrical influences of this album. A masterful mix of high brow vs low brow. Love it. Not to mention one of my favorite songs 'Drumming Song' is a masterful dramatic piece of theatrical video..Check it. Gotta love redheads:)
Also check out :
Hurricane Drunk (perfect narration to the last time I saw my ex:) )
This song has also been covered by one of my fav brit bands the xx.. check out their version
Two Door Cinema Club
For something a tad bit lighter, we move onto the Irish group Two Door Cinema Club, who's debut album 'Tourist History' is in my books, one of the best summer albums of 2010. (Yes I am aware that April does not count as summer yet, however all you need is the sun and an open patio to enjoy these tunes, both which are readily avalible) These talented young lads also opened for Phoenix in the US.... might have something to do with their album being signed to French label Kitsune Music, however I'd pay prime to see the both in action.
Some of my favs include:
Other tracks that have blown my mind in the last several months are as follows:
Tanlines- Real Life All this track needs is a mojhito and a beach. Classic
Jonsi- Boy Lilikoi Sigur Ros's Jonsi goes solo... and English? Known for his stunningly beautiful melodics, now we can all sing along. Check it
Freelance Whales - Broken Horse Still a sucker for a minor chord and a distraught voice.
Frightened Rabbit - Swim Until You Can't See Land
Love these Scottis dudes, and it's not just Scott Hutchison's charming voice that drives me nuts. Clever and witty lyrics throw me over the edge.
That's all for now folks, as the summer gears up I'm sure I'll have more to critic. Stay tuned.
Biz biz
